Power of Words
“The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.” Psalm 119:160
Do your words reflect the Love of God?
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
Proverbs 15:1
Words have the power TO Motivate OR Destroy, Energize OR deflate, Inspire OR Create Despair.
Many of us can remember the time our mother or father failed to give affirmation to us as a child.
The result was either:
* over achievement to prove their worth,
*or under achievement to prove they were right.
Why do we leave such precious words unsaid?
* Words that heal.
*Words that share the way we feel. *Words that become treasures one day when words are all that remain.
Today’s verse:
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” – Proverbs 18:21
This reminds us that the power isn’t in the tongue as a muscle, but in the words that fall from the tongue.
* We often talk about the negative words we should hold back,
BUT what about the words that we can freely offer to those we care about?
*Many a wife has lost her ability to love because of a critical husband.
* Many a husband has left a marriage because of words of disrespect and ungratefulness.
*Stories abound regarding the power of words.
BUT- There are just as many stories of those who have been encouraged, challenged, and comforted with words that made a difference in their lives.
*An example of encouraging, respectful and loving words recently for me: This Fathers Day my son said “Thank You for being a Great Dad and his Prayer was that he could be just as Good of a father for his three kids as I was for him”. Now that brought tears of joy in my heart! Those are life long words a parent waits to hear from their kids! What Joy!!
***Jesus knew the power of words.
*Jesus used Parables to convey His principles of the Kingdom of God.
*Jesus used Words of forgiveness and mercy.
Jesus used words to challenge.
*Jesus used words to inspire His disciples to miraculous faith.
Do your words give life? Do they inspire and challenge others to greatness? Who does God want you to encourage through your words today?
* Affirm someone close to you today!
*Be careful to speak words that increase the light of Christ, rather than words that increase the darkness.
“But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness.”
2 Timothy 2:16
God declared through Hosea, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6).
The implication here is powerful. God is telling us that having an intimate knowledge of his nature and
character IS A Powerful shield against Satan’s lies.
*Once I started reading the Bible to Prepare me for life, rather than Rescue me from it—the Bible came Alive.
* God really does know how to navigate this thing called life.
Day by Day, God’s guidelines for living have become a part of my everyday thinking.
Knowing and believing in God’s character as revealed in HIS Names provides great protection against enemy attack.
Shalom for example:
As a noun, the Hebrew word shalom means “completeness, health, welfare.” It implies being whole, in harmony with God and man, having wholesome relationships.
Shalom also indicates a state of being at ease—not restless, having PEACE BOTH Inwardly and Outwardly, being at REST BOTH Spiritually and Emotionally.
In short, shalom signifies Wholeness in a life or work.
*And as a verb, shalom means to be completed or finished, or to make
peace.
Shalom cannot be earned. We’ll never receive the Lord’s shalom until we
realize, “This is serious business. This is God almighty we are dealing with,
creator and sustainer of the universe. How can I continue taking him for
granted?
Why do we still test God’s grace, living with this sin as if God is deaf and blind to our secret acts?
*Do we tremble at God’s Word?
*Are you ready to obey everything the Word says?
** If so, you’ll receive the revelation of Jehovah Shalom. He’ll come to you personally as “the Lord, your peace,” filling your spirit with supernatural strength against every enemy.
*** You can’t earn this kind of peace; it’s a gift from God.
Again: Words have the power TO Motivate OR Destroy, Energize OR deflate, Inspire OR Create Despair.
It’s your choice which words come out!
Dear Lord, scripture is filled with words that remind me of Your love. May my tongue be used to affirm, to encourage, to lift up, and to share simple words that say “I love you” to the treasured people You put in my life and help me Always to speak blessings and Peace to All people in my encounters.
Lord, thank You for giving us the comprehensive and helpful owner’s manual, the Bible. Help develop in me a hunger for Your Word. I ask for wisdom to understand the hard things, and strength to live out Your commands. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
